March 10th is National Pack Your Lunch Day. While the focus is on healthier meal choices, packing your lunch can benefit the watershed as well:
- Litter Free Lunch: Fast food wrappers don’t just litter the floor of your car, they litter the watershed too. Make a litter free lunch by packing salad in a mason jar or a sandwich in a reusable bag. Pack your own reusable cutlery like sets of bamboo cutlery that are eco-friendly and portable. Also don’t forget your reusable water bottle!
- Avoid Extra Packaging Stay away from individually wrapped items such as yogurt cups, juice boxes, individual chip bags. Buy your favorite foods in bulk and make your own individual portions with reusable bags. Or pack food that doesn’t require packaging like apples, bananas and oranges.
- Keep it Cool: Get a hip lunch bag and plan your meals in advance so you have variety to keep it interesting. Purchase a reusable container with different compartments to hold everything from entrees to sides to snacks.
By packing your own lunch, you take control of what you’re eating, and you reduce waste to the watershed. With all the extra time you’ll save by not having to go buy lunch, you can take your packed lunch and have an impromptu picnic in the watershed, your favorite park, or just outside the office.
